Contact Details

Cossham Hospital, Lodge Road, Kingswood BS15 1LF
Paul Frisby, NHS South Gloucestershire, or 0117 330 2432.

Current Services

Services continue to be provided from the Cossham site whilst the building work is ongoing.

Physiotherapy and the MRI scanner have stayed at the top of the site.

Outpatients, X-Ray and Ultrasound have remained on site, but have moved to the top of Lodge Hill. Their temporary postcode is BS15 1LP.

Work Progressing

Builders started work on the £18.6 million redevelopment in June 2010. The main contractor is construction company ISG Pearce.

Cossham Hospital, built in 1907, is a distinctive building with many features that NHS South Gloucestershire is conserving. The tower and the frontage is being sensitively preserved for future generations to enjoy...

Work has begun on the two storey extension to the rear of the main building to provide modern facilities for X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI scanners and a single storey extension to the front of the old boiler house to house the renal dialysis unit.

The interior of the main building is being adapted to create a modern clinical environment, which will enable doctors, nurses and therapists to double the number of patients seen in outpatient clinics and having scans.

Birthing Pool Room

A minor injuries service will also be provided, as well as podiatry and dermatology clinics moving from the Kingswood Health Centre site.

North Bristol NHS Trust is also planning to provide renal dialysis and the first stand-alone Birth Centre in the area.

It is estimated that the number of patient visits to Cossham Hospital will grow from just over 70,000 in 2008/09 to nearly 140,000 in 2012/13. Most of these patients will be residents of Kingswood and East Bristol.

Once it is refurbished Cossham Hospital will provide:

  • more clinical areas such as consulting rooms and treatment cubicles - the number will increase from 31 to 56
  • new high tech accommodation for a range of services including minor injuries, imaging, dentistry, the birth centre and renal dialysis
  • attractive areas for patients, with information on health and related services, and travel links readily available Renal Dialysis Station
  • a new café area from which the League of Friends will offer refreshments
  • a new community hall to replace the recreation hall
  • better facilities for staff
  • additional care parking spaces
  • more disabled parking spaces and a large 'drop off' area close to the front door
  • the conservation and repair of the exterior of these grade II listed buildings

Cossham Hospital is scheduled to open again after work is completed in 2012.
